Surfactants: Surfactants are necessary for cleansing because they reduce surface tension between the skin and dirt/oil, allowing for easier removal. Cleansers and shampoos commonly contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and cocamidopropyl betaine. Humectants are substances that draw moisture from the environment and hold it in the skin, keeping it moisturized. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and propylene glycol are examples of humectants.
