The immune system incorrectly targets the myelin sheath, the protective coating of nerve fibers, in multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic and unpredictable illness of the central nervous system (CNS) that impairs communication between the brain and the body. Because of this disturbance, people with MS experience a wide range of symptoms that differ significantly from person to person, making the condition difficult to control.
